This week’s Podcast Short highlights stories on TSCA PFAS reporting in the US, regulatory simplification in the EU, Canada's Supreme Court hearing a challenge to the toxic listing of plastic items, and more.

In the US, the PFAS reporting window is due to start by the end of January, even as the EPA works to finalise a revision narrowing the scope of the regulation. That could leave thousands of companies having to make compliance decisions without knowing whether they will ultimately be exempt from the broad TSCA section 8(a)(7) reporting rule.

Meanwhile, in the EU, European Commission officials say regulatory simplification is necessary to make the trade bloc more competitive. Those comments come as the European Parliament votes on the Chemicals Omnibus package, which aims to simplify rules covering cosmetics and the classification, labelling and packaging of chemicals.

Other stories highlighted this week include:

  • early takeaways from Maine’s handling of ‘currently unavoidable use’ (CUU) PFAS exemptions and what businesses can learn from regulators’ approach so far;
  • the Supreme Court of Canada is set to hear an appeal of the government's order listing plastic manufactured items as 'toxic' under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA); and
  • Japan is considering adding controls for food contact materials (FCMs) made from rubber and paper.
